GD306 History of Graphic Design & Applied Typography - Syllabus
Week 1: Aug 2 – Aug 6
  • Assignment #1: Select 6-10 samples of titles/logos form magazines, websites, etc. that you find expressive. Write a paragraph about each describing what the type style communicates to you and why. Please be detailed in your description!
  • Assignment #2: Select a common phrase such as "Lost Dog" and create a sign with the words. Make the type placement and treatment expressive of the meaning conveyed by the words.
Week 2: Aug 7 – Aug 13
  • Lecture: Ancient Writing Systems, Roman Empire & Middle Ages Lettering
  • Reading Assignments: Stop Stealing Sheep pp.11-35 , History of Graphic Design pp. 4-59.
  • In-Class Assignment: Create a page that is 8 1/2 x 11" in the style of Celtic Manuscript Illumination. Use a passage that is 2-3 paragraphs in length. Page must have a drop cap and use a calligraphic font for the text.
Week 3: Aug 14 - Aug 20
  • Lecture: Renaissance Typography, Rocco & Colonial Typography
  • Reading Assignments: History of Graphic Design pp. 64-130, Stop Stealing Sheep Ch. 3 - 5.
  • In-Class Assignment: Celtic Manusript Illumination cont., Select a typeface in Adobe Illustrator and write a 2-page paper explaining the history of the typeface. Include information on the designer and related type faces.
Week 4: Aug 21st- Aug 27th
  • Lecture: Parts of a Character, Measuring Type, Matching Type with Message - See Reference links below
  • Reading Assignments: Stop Stealing Sheep Ch. 6 & 8, Review for Midterm
  • In-Class Assignment: Create an 8 1/2 x 11" design using parts of the same letter. Ensure the letter is recognizable within the finished image.
Week 5: Aug 28 – Sep 3
  • Lecture: The Industrial Revolution, Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau
  • Reading Assignments: History of Graphic Design pp.134-243, Stop Stealing Sheep Ch. 7 & 9.
  • In-Class Assignment: Midterm, Typographic Book Cover.
Week 6: Sep 4 (Labor Day) – Sep 10
  • Lecture: Graphic Design in the first half of the 20th Century
  • Reading Assignments: History of Graphic Design pp.248-352. Be prepared to discuss the section assigned to you in class. Take notes if necessary.

Week 7: Sep 11 – Sep 17
  • Lecture: Information Age Design, NY School, Logos
  • Reading Assignments: History of Graphic Design pp.356 - 423. Be prepared to discuss the section assigned to you in class. Take notes if necessary.

  • In-Class Assignment: Design/redesign a logo for a company or organization of your choice.
Week 8: Sep 18 – Sep 24
  • Lecture: International Modern Design, Digital Type
  • Reading Assignments: History of Graphic Design pp. 425-530. Be prepared to discuss the section assigned to you in class. Take notes if necessary.

  • In-Class Assignment: Rework your logo from Week 7 into three more finished versions. The three versions can use different fonts, colors and placement of images/text.
Week 9: Sep 25 – Oct 1
  • Lecture: Prepare questions for final exam (5 questions per student, must be essay format)
  • In-Class Assignment: Use your name to make a logo for yourself. Create a font and graphic that expresses your personality. Write a 4-5 page paper describing the font, the logo and how it was designed.
Week 10: Oct 2 - 4
  • In-Class Assignment: Finish logo project and paper
  • Projects Due: Present final project, take final exam
