GD312 - Digital Production Techniques for Screen - Syllabus
Week 1/2: Introduction to Digital Illustration
- Lecture: Content, Ubiquitous Computing, Setting up class folders
- Reading Assignment: Chapter 1 In Review questions
- Class Discussion: Go to an online technology publication such as Wired, MIT Technology Review or the New York Times Technology section. Select an article and write a 2 -3 paragraph summary. The article should focus on the impact of technology on society. Put a link to the article at the top of the summary and explain why you selected the article.
- Project Assignment: Select a print publication that also has an online version. This can be a publication of your choosing that is appropriate for classroom viewing. Select an article from each version and discuss the similarities and differences between the two in terms of content, layout, typography, writing style, graphics, etc. Write a 1-2 page summary and submit a copy of the print version with your paper.
- Class Folders for Projects: Set up a folder with your name and the class name on your Flash drive. Create folders for Weeks 1-9 in the folder. Place projects and assignments in these folders and turn in each week for grading. Weekly assignments will be placed in the GD312 folder on instructor's computer.

Week 3: Producing Digital Content for Print
- Lecture: Fonts, Resolution, KGA #1 Project - Cross Media Output
- Reading Assignment: Chapter 2, Exercises (PC users skip #2).
- Class Discussion: Review the Fonts and Software Handout and go to the font sites listed under the links section. Find five typefaces that you like. Write a 2 -3 paragraphs on the fonts you selected, why you like them and issues about their legal usage. Be prepared to discuss with the class.
- Project Assignment:
Cross Media Output project phase 1 - Your client has requested that you redesign their current promotional flyer and website. Select a business or non-profit organization and research their mission and objectives. You can use their web site and/or library resources. The company would like you to update their branding including their logo. See the KGA #1 phase one requirements.

- Option 1: Select a company (real or imaginary) that produces a specialty product line (cookies, jewelry, designer clothes). Write a summary (1 - 2 pages) describing the company (name & products) and the audience and purpose for the materials.
- Option 2: Create promotional materials for your portfolio work. Write a summary (1 - 2 pages) describing the work you will showcase and the audience and purpose for the materials.
- Phase 1 - Create a flow chart indicating the steps that need to be done for the project.
Refer to Chapter 6 in the book for more information.
- Phase 2 - Create a trifold brochure using InDesign showcasing the company products/your work. Preflight the brochure and save it as a PDF. Print it out using the school printer or an outside printing shop.
- Phase 3 - Create a four page web site using Dreamweaver with home, about (resume), products (porfolio) and contact
pages. The shopping cart (company site) does not need to be functional. Add Flash animation to the site or put a placeholder to indicate where you would add Flash animation. Use the GD241 Web project guidelines when creating your site. Upload the site to Angelfire or Tripod to publish the site to the web. Note: There is free hosting at both locations.
- Phase 4 - Present the flow chart, brochure and web site to the class.
